The Twelve Facts of Christmas!
Hooray! It's me! Ha ha! I'm back! (As Lucy always says to Charlie Brown, 'Have you been away?') But it's Christmas, so I'm going to do a whole twelve-days format-thing concept-type sort-of-idea. But with Doctor Who words. Not partridges. D'you get it? Brilliant!Twelve eps-a-ready! Yes, there's just one more to be written for Series Two, and that's my Episode 10. But then it's straight on to Series Three - we've already got one script on its third draft, alongside a two-parter which we've been planning since, ooh, June. Kept that secret, didn't we?
Eleven months-a-counting! I'm typing this in early November, and blimey, wasn't that the longest year ever? Doctor Who and the Endless Time. On the first day of 2005, there was that fleeting glimpse, a quick, cryptic promo shown before The Vicar of Dibley. And then, the deluge. Series One, then two more commissioned, one Christmas Special, then a second commissioned, a second series of Confidential ordered up, oh, those trailers, a million repeats, an interactive game, the beautiful BBC website, DVDs, the novels, the toys, the Annual... Who could have seen all of that coming? Really though? Well, maybe Verity Lambert and her crew, way back in 1963. Oh yes. I think they always knew.
Ten kids-a-queueing!* At the Waterstone's book signing in Cardiff, where Helen Raynor and I sat like husband and wife, except happier. A good few fans came along, though most we'd met already at the Charity Dinner. Sometimes you think there are thousands of fans; sometimes you think there are five. But the kids! A litany of 'Daleks, Slitheen, Daleks, Slitheen, Daleks, Slitheen!' And that, you might say, is the whole bloody point of it.
(*All right, there were more than ten. But I've got a format here, d'you see? A format!)
Nine hours a-Frenching! No, what I mean is, that's how long Julie Gardner and I were in Paris, to launch Medecin Qui on France 4. I'm kidding, oh my sides, it's still called Doctor Who. But we sat and watched Episode 1 dubbed rather brilliantly into French. Rose cries out 'Weel-san, Weel-san!' To make the lip-synch better, the Doctor doesn't send her home for beans on toast but for boeuf bourguignon! And she didn't get the bronze, but the gold. (What the hell does that do to canon?) I did wonder what they were going to do with 'lots of planets have a north' but I confess, dear reader, I fell asleep in that bit. I've seen that episode too many times now.
Eight days-a-raining! Yes, mark the date, 8 November 2005. The first day that filming on our version of Doctor Who has ever been rained off. Torrential! Wales awash! Everyone sent home. Bah, humbug.
Seven weeks-a-shopping! Until Christmas, at the time of writing. Hmm, you might buy a DVD box set. Hmm, you might even wonder where the deleted scenes are, the ones we keep mentioning in the commentaries. Hmm. Well. Um. How can I put this...? We've been wondering how to tell you, and this column drew the short straw. So. Um. Deep breath. We lost them. Genuinely, lost, forgotten, dumped. Yikes. This is what happened: every time a line or scene was deleted, we'd make a mental note to keep it. But mental notes aren't very visible. When the box set was being compiled, everyone assumed that someone else was in charge of the deleted stuff. (Be fair! We were busy!) And meanwhile, after the transmission of The Parting of the Ways, editing suites were being powered down, Series One archived, material lost. By the time we realised what had happened - oh, Julie's horror, she didn't even tell me for a fortnight - it was too late, the DVD deadline had sailed past. But don't worry! Work has been done since, at great length, and thank God, everything can now be redigitised and retrieved. A digital resurrection! The lost scenes have been found, just not in time for the first (still very brilliant) box set. Maybe next year. Sorry.
Six-pages-filming! That's how long the Children In Need scene was - which is a whole day's shoot, so enormous thanks to everyone for turning that around. The scene was Julie's idea - I'd said no, no, a thousand times no, to skits and sketches and musical numbers with TARDIS-a-go-go on Planet Pudsey, until Julie said oh-so-casually of The Christmas Invasion, 'I've always wondered what happened just before scene one...' Ooh. Got me. Good idea!
Five gooo-ooold riiiings! Love that bit.
Four facts a-gleaming! Yes, there will be four brand-new facts about Series Two in the bumper-issue Christmas Radio Times. Including two new episode titles! I'm sorry, DWM, but it's the Radio Times. They have infinite power. My masters, my masters, they hide in the dark space...
Three awards-a-winning! Hooray for the NTAs, that was a laugh. I kissed all the Hollyoaks boys. In my mind. Tony Warren told me he loved Doctor Who, especially 'the baby coming through the letterbox.' Ant and Dec gave genuine congratulations, which really meant a lot. And at one point, Barbara Windsor was turned round in her chair, yelling, 'Russell! Russell! Well done!' I waved, accidentally-regally, all the while thinking, how does she know my name? Does she watch Doctor Who Confidential? What does she prefer, the classic montages or new set reports?
Two eps-a-swapping! Oh my God! We're changing the running order of next year's episodes? No?!! Yes!!!! Why?! 'Cos we've found a better way! More next year! Place your bets!! Exclamation marks!!!
And a ferret in a Newport Studio! Yes, really. Two weeks ago, a live, Welsh ferret just ran on to the set of The Girl In The Fireplace. I said to Phil, what did you do? 'We put it in a cage.' Oh. Where did you get a cage? Pause. 'I've no idea. It was very posh.' I suspect Madame de Pompadour's parrot has been ousted, or eaten. It's a showbiz tale.

I don't know what kind of response I'll get for this kind of post, but I figured I'd see what people had to say. I've been lurking here for a long time. Why not participate a little? I don't want to seem attention-seeking by introducing myself with a laundry list of ~special identities~ but in this case it's sort of the point of my post, so here it goes. I'm 35 and have dealt with a lifetime of mental illness; my first visits to a therapist were in elementary school. I live with anxiety, depression, and Autism Spectrum Disorder, with ASD impacting my executive function and making it extremely difficult to take care of myself. I also have trouble with migraines, digestive issues which require dietary restrictions, and a life-wrecking sleep disorder called Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder (N24 for short). I'm usually sick a couple times a week, rarely feel 100%, and often sleep 10-16 hours per day due to exhaustion from a combination of disordered sleep, depression, and sensory overwhelm. Because of all this, it is nearly impossible to work outside the home or for any type of manager. I did it for many years, but the stress took a toll. I now work for myself doing freelance editing, and health-wise I'm much better, but income-wise I'm [i]much[/i] worse off. I don't even make $10k annually. With that length introduction out of the way, you may be able to understand why, for these reasons and others I won't go into, I have been single for almost 15 years. I've been on a casual date here and there, but they don't tend to go that well and I never see them again. I've even been led on and then ghosted via text (which is easy to do to me; if you tell me you're busy due to exams and you'll let me know when you're free sometime, I'll believe you and then just keep asking how your exams are going like an idiot... lol). As for why dates don't go well, in my opinion: I think I have trouble being casual enough to let the other girl relax on the first date, because I really like to get to know someone in depth right away. I'm not really interested in small talk, you know? Especially at this point in my life, I'm very invested in finding a serious partner who is a good match for me in the most important ways. I don't want to have a decent time with someone and then on the third date find out she's a TERF or hates Jews (which I am) or never wants to settle down... Maybe that's impatient of me. I don't know. What do you think? Would you be intimidated by someone who wants to have deep conversations on the first date, or would you find that sort of conversation stimulating? I think the bigger problem, though, is that I'm often stopped from even searching for potential dates because I feel like such an awful prospect. I know how much work I'd be as a partner. Even if someone really loved my personality and looks, not everyone wants to be with someone they have to take care of, either financially or health-wise. I plan to try and work more/make a bit more money, and I'm being evaluated to go on disability income right now, but I know I'll never make that much. It's even more ridiculous, because I want to have a baby, and how can I even ask for such a thing with the way I am? I altered this story to be about Eldritch Garfield purely by changing or replacing the pronouns and names, and a few descriptions, just to see if it worked.

Part IV: The Gallery
The cat in the deserted alley was not the same as the one he remembered from his youth; though similarly plump, this one had flame-textured fur of orange and black. That meant little to Jon, for all that mattered was the cat's pain. He hated it, he hated its stare, its smug judgmental stare like all the other stupid fucking cats that stared at him within a day of each of his recreational killings, as if it knew what he had done, as if it knew what he was thinking, as if the dumb creature had the cognitive abilities to actually judge him, the audacity to mock him silently behind that sickly green gaze. He hated the attention, he hated the humiliation, he hated the silent persecution these useless furry mutes delivered, and it was time to get even. He would teach this petulant feline to dare to judge a stronger, superior being; to judge activities and pleasures it could not possibly comprehend. He reached one hand into his jacket and touched the cold steel of his scalpel, preparing to take back what was his, preparing to take back the power and dignity these evil felines kept stealing from him through their demonic eyes.
Besides, the stupid thing was reassuringly small enough to overcome.
Slowly and silently, he approached the still and seated cat.
The cat got on all fours and approached him, equally slow, equally silent ... until it let out a soft 'meow', as if in greeting, or requesting to be stroked.
Jon chuckled lightly, amused by the feline's misplaced trust. This was going to be easy. Too easy.
Predator and prey continued to approach each other, the gap between them closing until Jon could make out the lamplit beads of moisture on the cat's nose and whiskers, the bloodstains under its chin, his own reflection in its dark narrow pupils...
Something was wrong ... he should not have been able to see the cat's face in so much microscopic detail; not at this distance.
Then he realized that he was the size of an ant, and the cat was as massive as a mountain. Eyes wide and bright with fury, it opened its fanged mouth again, emitting a thunderous moan of hunger as millions writhed and squirmed in the fiery red lining of its endless throat...
Jon screamed and thrashed in his bed, then recoiled at the presence of another huge feline face. This one had grey and white stripes, and seemed to chuckle at him through rhythmic growling snorts.
'More bad dreams?' said Nermal . 'I hope they are preparing you for what awaits.'
Jon felt his entire bed lower and sway, then realized that he was not in a bed at all, but being carried in the muscled grey cat's massively powerful arms. He looked up and around, noticing that he and the crew were inside a huge cave suffused with a dim, red glow.
'Where are we?' he enquired.
'Close to the end,' said Nermal, standing before him. 'We thought we should take you for a little walk through His Majesty's Infernal Gallery, so that you'll have a faint impression of what you're in for.'
The cave tilted, and Jon's feet hit the floor with an unceremonious thud. He gave a soft hiss of discomfort as his ankles absorbed the impact.
'So, that hurt you, did it?' said Nermal . 'I don't think you're ready.'
'Enough taunting, Nermal,' said Arlene. 'This is the final hour of pleasure he's ever going to have.'
Jon felt the solid pressure of Nermal 's giant hand-paw gently gripping his upper arm. He could not understand why he still needed to be restrained in such a way, considering that Arlene, Odie and Nermal still carried their rifles.
Suddenly, Jon felt a tremor under his feet.
'Did you feel that?' Nermal gasped.
Most of the crew nodded nervously - a surprising reaction from such a tough bunch.
'He knows,' said Nermal , glancing at Jon.
'Who is he?' Jon rapidly enquired.
All refused to answer as Jon was ushered deeper into the cave.
Up ahead, above an entrance to another cavern, was a darkly toned picture large enough to cover a mansion - the strangest picture Jon had ever seen. A group of terrified, naked humans were falling into the maw of a huge and ravenous monster. Fire and smoke billowed from the creature's mouth and nostrils, roasting the victims within. Above floated what had to be a particularly hideous beast-head - bat-winged, lizard-legged, furred and horned, with a bulbous stare that was gleeful in its cruelty. On its belly was an equally hideous, scowling human face. Jon recalled Nermal 's ability to carry a man in her belly; but this second face was grotesquely out of proportion, being larger than the face on the head. Above this vile creature floated what appeared to be a long flag fluttering in the breeze - or, more likely, a scroll with strange writing.
'This is a reproduction of one of Earth's oldest known artworks,' said Odie. 'The original probably did not survive the Terrible Mondays; but by then almost all artworks had been stored electronically, even amateur ones. This one, of course, is far from amateurish. It dates more than a thousand years before the swarms, when even printing machines were rare novelties. The scroll above the demon features lettering in an ancient language. Roughly translated, it says 'There is no redemption from hell'. The picture was inspired by one of baseline humanity's greatest works of literature; the rather ironically entitled Divine Comedy by the great religious scholar Dante Alighieri. By describing Hell in such a graphically detailed fashion, Dante created a meme that would reshape the religion his own people had already been practicing for centuries.'
The group walked under the grotesque image and into a long hallway lined with many more grotesque images. To his left and right, Jon gawked in disbelief at paintings and drawings of hideous monstrosities and abject suffering. Several depicted people chained to rocks as they were assailed by fiery rain, while other victims were either crushed or swallowed by huge serpents. One showed a huge scaly demon holding human victims in both its mouths - the one on its face and the one on its belly. The paintings by the artist called 'Bosch' were a frenzy of strange and colorful creatures administering equally strange torments and disfigurements upon their pitiful human victims.
All the way, Odie explained the content of each picture, displaying knowledge that was surely the mark of extensive and passionate research. Jon himself shuffled and stared numbly, unable to connect such insane imagery with the reality of his present situation. This surely had to be some insidious psychological tactic designed to maximize his fear and break his spirit, not unlike that employed by the Tylansian government when dealing with political subversives and radicals. One thing was certain: the artists of Old Earth displayed a level of creativity, a brazen sweep of explosive expression, which was rarely seen in the history of his own planet.
The ground shook three times during the tour of the gallery, each tremor a little stronger than the last.
'And now we come to the second part of the Gallery,' said the Chaplain as the group crossed an open hallway into a second narrow gallery. Here, the colors were even more vivid in their almost uniform reds and purples. Some of them moved.
Jon averted his gaze from the walls and pretended to show intense interest in the barren stone floor. He did not want to look at the new pictures. They were too real, too alive, whatever they were. He tried not to think about what he had barely glimpsed in those pictures.
Suddenly, his head felt as if it was being held in a cushioned vice. 'Look,' said Nermal as her furred thumb and index finger jerked Jon's head upwards to face the wall. 'Open your eyes, or else I'll open them for you,' added the muscled grey cat.
Trembling all over, Jon slowly opened his eyes and beheld the rich textures and hues of the life-sized picture before him...
... a strangely beautiful young man, his skin a golden tan, his curly hair and mustache a gleaming black, affectionately holding a plump, short-haired cat close to his body. A brilliant halo of love seemed to surround the embracing pair.
The cat was orange and black - exactly the same as the cat in Jon's last nightmare.
'This is where the story begins,' said Odie. 'With the beautiful, hungry orange Cat, so loved and protected by his owner, Lyman, so loyal and affectionate in return. If ever the bond between pet and master reached a pitch of almost divine beauty, it was between the pair you see before you.
'Nearly five thousand years ago, a ship of prisoners came to this planet. It had hitched a ride inside a much larger, more advanced starship that was able to travel close to the speed of light. As the greater starship re-accelerated outward to its distant destination, the prison ship went into orbit around the world whose surface we now walk beneath; then a lifeless world with an adequate atmosphere, despite the excess of carbon dioxide.
'Some time during the rotating ship's long orbit, while machines far below were preparing accommodation for the prisoners and their supervisors, the Cat wandered the ship's corridors alone, for his owner and the rest of the staff had been distracted by mysterious power surges. And on that terrible day, one man, one prisoner, took advantage of the chaos in order to fulfill his most repulsive act of revenge.'
The group moved on to the next picture; that of a large man with a shaven head and a lifeless stare.
'That prisoner - who henceforth became known only as the Primordial Sacrifice, for the fate that was soon to befall him was so hideous that none dare speak his name -, was the most cruel, most cowardly, most irredeemably evil murderer on the entire ship, for his many victims were exclusively the most innocent, the most defenseless, the youngest.'
All eyes turned to Jon, all filled with knowing disgust.
'He had to be separated from the other prisoners for his own safety,' added Arlene.
'The Cat's owner was not a cruel person,' Odie continued, 'but he did not suffer fools gladly, and he was fond of questioning the Sacrifice's manhood, courage and intellectual integrity. The Sacrifice, his pride hurt by the female guard's most casual remarks, had been fantasizing his vengeance ever since emerging from hibernation, and had decided to hurt the cat in the worst way imaginable. Thus he lured the Cat into a trap of his devising.'
Odie sighed deeply, and his crewmates watched him with something approaching sorrow. If Jon did not know the rest of the story, it was obvious that they did, and sympathized with their Chaplain for carrying the burden of such a heavy tale.
'I told you, Jon, that this man was cruel even by the low standards of that ship. However, there is nothing I could say that could shock you, for there is nothing that this man did that exceeded your own acts of inexcusable cruelty. That being said, what this pathetic excuse for a man did to that innocent animal defied the most warped imagination of even the other murderers that distantly neighbored his cell. After the guard's beloved pet was found - barely alive, no longer recognizable - all prisoners and many guards renewed their hatred for the coward, renewed their desire to slaughter him in slow and gruesome ways.
'Unless I am mistaken,' said Odie, 'your first victim was a cat, was it not?'
Jon nodded numbly. Uncomfortably close, Nermal flexed her claws tensely before Arlene shot her a reproving glance.
'There are many parallels,' said Odie, 'between the vile acts of the Primordial Sacrifice and the vile acts of your own youth. The similarities are as remarkable as they are appalling.'
'Odie already mentioned that the Cat was full at the time,' said Nermal , focusing on Jon as if deciding which organs to rip out. 'He had been close to full. With the internal injuries he had sustained, there was nothing they could do to save the cat.'
'Sadly true,' added Odie. 'Yet, though close to death, the Cat Himself could still be saved, at least in theory. The owner was so desperate to save his beloved pet that he scrambled for the most advanced medicine he could find. Unfortunately, what he sought was so advanced that it was not categorized as medicine by his kind.
'You see, the prison ship carried a mysterious gift called a 'godseed'. It was a gift from the same beings that had carried them all that way. None of the crew understood what this godseed was capable of, nor its true purpose. Yet the angelic beings that helped carry the smaller ship had ensured the crew that the seed must be planted in their time of need. That time of need was expressed in a poetic riddle passed down from one generation to the other to this day:
'Plant the seed for love that's risked
In time of direst hate.
Plant the seed in purest rage
For healing of a mate.
Plant the seed when chances lost
Lead only one path out.
Plant the seed in innocence
And watch the Angel sprout.
'The owner could not resist temptation, for to him it was so clear that the riddle was for him and his beloved pet. Without hesitation, he inserted the godseed into the body of the unconscious orange cat.'
The Chaplain inhaled, his breath trembling, as if afraid to continue the tale.
'No mortal among us truly understands what happened on that darkest of nights. No one truly understands why it happened. Oh, we have theories. We have tales passed on from generation to generation. We have physical evidence. We even have great words of mind and feeling from Garfield Himself. Perhaps all the stars were wrong, so horribly wrong, at that moment. Perhaps the Great Lord was distracted, and averted His attention from His creation at that moment. But there was no doubt that, on that darkest of moments, the powers that were saw fit to eschew all order, all sanity, and let something truly monstrous come into being.'
Jon was ushered on to the next picture, and this time he definitely did not want to look.
'Keep your eyes open!' snarled Nermal as Jon's head was raised by gentle furry pressure under his chin.
At the sight before him, Jon let out a whimper.
The creature in the picture was not recognizable as a feline. It was not recognizable as any conceivable living creature. It was a congealed mass of thrown-away scraps. It was a skinless obscenity that filled an entire room; a nightmarish cluster of eyes and drooling mouths, all numbering in the dozens, no two of them the same size or shape or angle. How many limbs did this hideous thing have? Eight? Nine? It was impossible to determine where it began and where it ended. Did it crawl on the floor, or the walls, or the ceiling? Did all eyed and mouthed limbs have to touch every edge of the room like a spiderweb of thick raw muscle?
No, this had to be a myth. This could never have lived. Jon refused to live in a universe where something like this could ever come to life.
'The godseed did far, far more than merely repair and replace lost tissue,' continued Odie. 'It created new tissue ... masses and masses of it. New bone, new muscle, new organs, new glands, far beyond anything that was necessary in a creature of flesh and blood.'
'All lifeless carbon in the operating theatre was absorbed into his new body. Organs copied and multiplied, distorted in form, randomized in position. Miraculously, all bystanders were unharmed, and had plenty of time to escape the medical lab and close off the area; though temporary this plan turned out to be.
'Yet of all the cells that multiplied, we now know that it was the proliferation of new neurons that had the most profound effect, for the creature - inconceivably - seemed able to control his own transformation. He became vastly more intelligent than any of the humans on board the vessel; even more than the ship's controlling computer. He had breached what we call the first singularity of consciousness, and entered the realm of the truly superhuman. Yet His intelligence was not of order, but of chaos. He had become an animin - an angel of chaos -; and was driven by a single goal that, as alien as it was, was soon to become all too horribly obvious.
'As I have told you, the hideously transformed Cat did not harm any bystanders. The staff and most of the prisoners were safe, as traumatized as they were by his mere appearance, the chorus of hideous howls from his dozens of malformed throats. He most definitely did not harm his former owner, and indeed later turned out to be rather protective of him; for, as tremendously he had transformed, some solid remnant of that loving bond remained.
'No; there was only one person on board that ship that he wanted. And no barrier, no matter how solid, could withstand his insatiable lust for him.'
A tremor rattled Jon's body as the riddle became terribly clear. 'The ... the prisoner who abused him?' he said weakly.
Odie nodded, and ushered the group onto the next picture. Jon wished that he could feel relieved that the monster was not in it. Unfortunately, what it did depict offered no comfort. The prisoner known as the Primordial Sacrifice was huddled in the corner of his padded cell, the look of absolute terror on his face shockingly familiar to Jon.
He had seen that look on his own victims.
'The Cat Garfield was able to secrete a corrosive fluid from many of his mouths,' explained Odie. 'An acid venom, dark and potent. The superstrong alloy of the ship's walls was no barrier to him. They melted before his regurgitations like ice before boiling lava. Yet he was careful not to damage the ship's outer hull. he meant no harm to the innocent. he had redesigned his own body for only one purpose - to reunite himself with his torturer, forever.
'At that moment, the poor Primordial Sacrifice was the most unfortunate, most pitiful creature that ever lived. He was still sporting the bruises inflicted by outraged prison guards when they had discovered what he had done to the Cat, Garfield. And now, he was going to suffer a fate infinitely worse. He could hear the infernal choir of demonic feline screeches through the air conditioning vents. He could hear the hellish hiss and bubble of the walls beyond corroding under the hot lust of the chaotic angel's venom blood. He thrashed and wept and wailed in his straightjacket, hurling his head violently but harmlessly against the cushioned walls. He so desperately, desperately wanted to die. For he knew, at that very moment, that he was going to suffer more horribly than any living creature had ever suffered in the history of the universe. He knew, beyond all comfort sought in doubt, that there was a Hell, there was a Devil, and he was hopelessly, irrevocably damned.'
Nermal picked up the trembling, wriggling Jon and carried him to the next picture.
'I don't want to look. I don't want to look.'
'You dare shut your eyelids again I shall tear them off!'
Jon's fear of Nermal won over his fear of looking at the next picture, but that offered him no comfort as he gazed upon the most horrific scene he had ever witnessed. Too afraid to close his eyes, Jon stood there in the grip of the muscled grey cat's mighty paws and wept with terror.
There was the Cat monster again, oozing his meaty bulk through the jagged hole in the cell wall. All of Garfield’s eyes were focused upon some shapeless, twisted form in the grip of several of his limbs, under dozens of thickly drooling mouths that grinned with malicious hunger. The thing he held looked as if it could have been his own offspring, for there was a superficial resemblance - skinless, shapeless, erupting with eyes and screaming mouths. Bubbling gashes were open in the parts of its body under the dripping mouths, exposing ruined layers of tissue beneath.
Jon did not want to speculate what that wretched thing was, what it might have been. There was no way, no way, no way, that thing could have possibly ever been human.
'The two,' said Odie, 'once victim and torturer, now predator and prey, were united; and in that First Embrace the first true Damnation began.
'The Cat Garfield injected his wretched victim with the septic nanotech that now flowed through his blood. Garfield split and multiplied his prey’s nerves so that he would feel new levels of pain, more exquisitely than natural evolution would ever allow. He corroded his extremities with acid venom. He turned him inside out over and over again. He distorted and scrambled his biology in a thousand different ways. He liquefied his bones so that he flopped and squirmed like a slug. He grew noses and anuses all over his body so that he would sniff nothing but his own bloody diarrhea. He gave him new mouths to scream with, new eyes to watch his own disfigurement. Again and again He would remold his body like clay. But He would never let him die. He would never let him rest. He had granted him a full and grievous immortality. For when He had been mortal, the man had spoken to Garfield in the Language of Pain. Now a minor god, Garfield replied to him in the Language of Pain, with an eloquence and poetry that us mere mortals shall thankfully never know.
'Yet, in the orgasmic throes of his lust, merely holding the wretch outside his body was not enough. Garfield had to keep him, own him, carry him; let not a single nanosecond of his relief sully the eternal, infinitely intense bond of their unholy matrimony. Thus he opened his belly wide and thrust him into its hot red lining, sealing him forever from the liberation of death. For, as the murderer of the Cat, the once-human Primordial Sacrifice now unwillingly replaced with his body and soul what he had stolen from Garfield. Deep, deep inside him, the man's writhings of agony were Garfield’s new joy, and he sang his lust through a chorus of a hundred throats.'
By now, Jon was too weak, too limp to offer any resistance when they ushered him on to the next picture. The Cat Monster was standing in the centre of a dark, multi-ribbed enclosure, surrounded by fearfully reverent humans.
'Centuries passed, and for a long time not one more mortal would suffer even an infinitesimal fraction of what the Primordial Sacrifice continued to suffer in the belly of Garfield . On the surface of the new world, the descendents of the guards and prisoners built a civilization around the reverence of their Master, built a temple in his honor. He fed only upon the planet itself, slowly expanding to mountainous proportions. No longer a common animin, He became an animin power, and relished the next level of cosmic wisdom almost as much as He relished the continual agony and misery of His eternal prey that was the Primordial Sacrifice.'
The next picture was of a conical mountain of mouths and eyeballs. A tentacle reached out to grasp a pathetic human figure.
'Yet, after a thousand years, the time would come when, once again, Garfield would need sinners to feed upon.
'In his frenzied and chaotic wisdom, he imparted upon his human subjects the secrets of superior technology, of faster and more efficient star travel. For it was their lifelong duty to go out among the stars and collect the cruel, the sadistic, the unrepentant, and deliver them unto HIM for his eternal pleasure.
'In later centuries, it became apparent that Garfield’s hunger won approval from a handful of even greater powers. One star god who shall not be named arranged the construction of several wormholes in key systems to allow for swifter collection of the wicked.
'From star to star, from world to world, from wormhole to wormhole, in places where crime and cruelty were still common, His minions would search the prisons and palaces for the most evil souls, those worthy of His everlasting embrace. For He was not motivated by rage or revenge, but only constant and endless conversation in the Language of Pain, that very Language that the Primordial Sacrifice had taught Him when He had been small and mortal and vulnerable. He believed that those who took the most pleasure in inflicting pain must surely take the most pleasure in receiving pain. Of course, the cruelest mortals being cowards, this was not the case; but it mattered not to Him. Whatever pain they gave the living, He would return a trillionfold, a trillion trillionfold, infinityfold - for the pain He offered was truly without measure, without interval, without end. For predator and prey shared the Language of Pain, and in that unholy Language His victims shall shriek throughout eternity the chorus of the damned.'
'And you are about to join them,' said Nermal. 'His imps have been watching you in disguise for the past few years.'
'Imps?'
'Did you not notice how cats would stare at you within a day of one of your disgusting acts?' said Nermal. 'They were the Garfield’s remotes in disguise; transported to your world through His portion of the Wormhole Nexus, transmitting their reports back to Him through the same network. They were judging your acts, measuring the pleasure that you derived from them, and determining the severity of your damnation.'
'All too true,' added Nermal . 'When a cat stares at you with that focusing gaze, he is already planning your fate. Which circle of Hell do you belong? Seventh circle? Eighth? That has been the way for thousands of years.'
'And for thousands of years the agony of the damned was His Majesty's primary source of pleasure,' the Chaplain continued, 'but it was not His primary source of nourishment. His consumption of the atmosphere gradually added to His bulk, while the heat of the sun above and the molten rock beneath provided the energy to convert the elements of the sky itself into a continent of flesh. Of His many titles, one of them is Eater of the Sky. He devoured Heaven to fatten Hell. Now, there is no air above the ground; only below. In His mercy, he allowed his servants to breathe and continue her bidding.'
The group moved on to a floating hologram of a strangely textured planet - smooth and dark as a sphere of black stone. The crust facing the group turned translucent. While the molten magma beneath was visible in parts, something red and shapeless blotted out much of its fiery glow, like an ulcer beneath the skin of the planet. Given the scale of the hologram, the thing must have been hundreds of kilometers wide. Hundreds of roots extended from its base down into the translucent magma. A fine film of red mist floated above the surface of the shape, slowly swirling like a bloody soap bubble.
As Nermal gently nudged Jon forward to allow him a closer appraisal of the hologram, Jon noticed that the shapeless thing was covered in thousands of tiny eyes. Equally numerous spiracles opened and dilated with rhythmic slowness, mostly no larger than pores upon human skin.
Beneath his feet, the cave floor shook again.
'No,' said Jon. 'This thing could never live. It's not possible.'
Odie ignored him as a transparent lens floated over the surface of the planet.
'His roots now extend throughout the entire planetary crust,' said the Chaplain. 'The surface only harbors one species of life, and that is Garfield Herself; or, more precisely, the leafy extrusions of his body that drink nothing but sunlight.'
Through the lens, Jon saw a thick and tangled forest of pitch black, spidery foliage, with monstrous leaves like dark batwings.
The lens moved over the shapeless mass, and Jon's entire body shuddered as he glimpsed huge eyes staring directly at him. It settled over the largest spiracle in the centre of the mass, which opened and magnified into a deep, nine-ringed throat of sickly redness. The throat's inner lining constantly shimmered, as if from millions of constant, microscopic motions.
Jon recognized it instantly. He scrunched his eyes shut as tight as possible. 'Why are you showing me this!' he cried. 'It's not real. It's not real.'
'Open your eyes!' bellowed the muscled grey cat, shaking Jon as if he was not already shaking enough.
Before his petrified gaze, the lens was expanding, while the image underneath grew at a much faster rate. The wriggling motions on the throat's upper ring became discernible as distinct, separate forms.
Buried up to their waists in boiling, bubbling red meat, thousands of living beings writhed and thrashed. Many of them were recognizably human, all sporting huge red sores.
'Hell is the part of Garfield's body where he keeps His precious victims,' Odie said matter-of-factly. 'It is divided into nine levels. The first level is for sinners who committed only one atrocious act in their lives without remorse. They suffer nothing worse than burns, boils and blisters.'
'I don't think he's going there,' said Nermal.
'On the second level,' continued Odie, 'the damned suffer necrosis. On the third, constant digestion of the flesh.'
Jon averted his gaze long enough to glimpse Nermal shaking her head at Odie, before Nermal forced him to face the horrid hologram.
'The lower levels,' said Odie, 'is where Her Majesty's use of nanotech destruction and reconstruction reaches frightening levels of creative genius. Torment becomes both physical and psychological.'
The lens zoomed in on some individuals whose torment beggared belief. One skinless man, almost indistinguishable from the bubbling thick stew all around him, rose to the waist out of the squelching muck and raised his arm to the misty red sky above. His arm suddenly transformed into a serpent, turned on him and engulfed his entire face, its fangs neatly penetrating his eye sockets. On a nearby bony outgrowth, a half-eaten figure stumbled around awkwardly on jagged bony stumps where feet should have been, constantly being chased and nibbled by dozens of swiftly swarming spider-like creatures. Another thrashed around in terror and revulsion, desperate to escape his own body as hideous faces opened up in his wounds and laughed at him. A fourth watched helplessly as every space of his own flesh erupted with wriggling white worms as fat as thumbs.
'The deeper the level, the deeper the torments,' said Odie.
'For ... how long?'

I am FULLY aware the title sounds sexist but hear me out, please. My girlfriend comes from a wealthy background and grew up with maids, chefs, chauffeurs etc. I was raised in a completely opposite environment and still adjusting to dating someone like her.
When we’re not with her parents, we spent a lot of time at one of her apartments. Here’s the issue: my gf likes to walk around home barely wearing anything which is fine (awesome even) BUT she does this even when the ‘help’ are around.
For example last month her family hired a new driver for her. He stopped by the apartment to introduce himself. She was only wearing underwear. Keep in mind, this is the FIRST time they’ve met in person. I felt awkward, he was visibly awkward and she didn’t give a shit at all. She was casually chatting to him while a scrolling away on her phone.
She does this all the time. She doesn’t think she needs to wear any decent amount of clothes at all when people that work for her are around. She will casually walk around wearing just a thong OR a tiny crop top (just a crop top, nothing else).
She even does this with complete strangers! One time she opened the door for the delivery guy wearing only a see through gown. You could see everything. Afterwards I talked to her about it and she was utterly confused as to why I felt uncomfortable. Then she laughed and told me to “stop being a jealous baby”. She even said that I’m unreasonable.
We had another discussion about this yesterday and I told her that she probably wouldn’t feel comfortable if I did the same. She said that she doesn’t understand why I care what her staff think and that it never even crossed her mind that this is inappropriate. She told me that she only does this in the comfort of her home and not in front of“actual people” i.e. people that don’t work for her.
She got kinda mad at me and vented to her friends. According to all of them, I’m “weird” for having a problem with this and an asshole for telling my GF to cover up. Somehow I’m the villain of this story. Am I really the asshole?

Some thoughts on my AITA post.
I didn’t expect my post to blow up the way it did. However it gave me much to think about and I decided to have another discussion with her.
I brought up a lot of the great points that were raised in the thread. She just didn’t understand why her actions were inappropriate. In fact she thought it was bizarre that I seemed to care what her staff think. Here’s the fundamental difference: when we’re in a room with - let’s say her maid - I believe there to be three people in the room. She thinks it’s just the two of us. This brings me to my next point.
I didn’t mention this in the AITA post (due to rules) however she has no problem doing anything - and I mean anything in front of them. This was a big issue at the start because I had to tell her that I’m uncomfortable being intimate when there are people around. Once again she didn’t get why I’d feel uncomfortable but stopped doing it.
Anyway during our discussion she accused me of having a misogynistic viewpoint. She claimed that I’m “offended” by the “female body” outside of a sexual context. On top of that she once again accused me of being jealous. I told her that it’s fucked up to subject people to her naked body without their consent - especially if they’re not people that directly work in her home (e.g. delivery drivers) . Or her new personal driver who already has seen her butt naked. I even explained that it’s not really safe to do so.
She laughed and asked me what’s gonna happen. Then she said that they can’t have her anyway so what am I worried about.
The conversation went nowhere. I don’t believe she’ll change her mind. And after really thinking about it, I realized that she most likely doesn’t view me as an equal. As someone from a disadvantaged background (lost parents early, financial struggles, no stability) this is all very personal to me. Yes she finds me attractive and doesn’t hide me away but I don’t think that counts for much. I have much more in common with the people she deems inferior. If they’re invisible to her then I am too in some ways.
Don’t get me wrong - I love her and love spending time with her. It’s probably hard to believe but she’s very sweet and caring. However I don’t think I’ll continue this relationship- not unless she changes her mindset at least.
One last thing. I’d like to clarify that I’m not a sex worker or a cop or a gigolo (had to Google that one). I’m also not a private investigator or sugar baby.

During the quarantines, I decided to pass the time by working on a Reddit app with a fresh new design, because I sort of felt that the existing Reddit app I used was beginning to feel dated.
Well the project kept on growing as I decided to flesh out the app with more and more features. But finally after months of work, I'm ready to release Karma for Reddit as a usable beta app, for you guys to try and give feedback :)

I know everyone already has their favorite Reddit app, but I hope you give this one a go. I designed it from the ground up to be both beautiful and functional. Some of the features that make Karma for Reddit different include:
Material You + Dynamic Themes for each subreddit
From the start, I always planned for the app to have a theme that changes for every subreddit.Then earlier this year, Google announced Material You and I pivoted a bit to match the style. In the end it turned out really good IMO.
The themeing engine uses the subreddit's own declared colors (set by the subreddit's mods), but it also extracts colors from the subreddit banner and icon.

- When you're viewing a link, you can tap / swipe the Comments button to bring up the comments. Then, you can drag back down to dismiss the comments [example video]
Offline support
The app is fully architected with offline support in mind.Right now, as you use the app, any posts or comments you view are saved in the app's storage. Later if you're on a spotty connection or have no data, it lets you browse the all the stuff that was previously saved.

While offline support is there under the hood, in the future I plan to add more control over the feature, including subreddit downloading / syncing. That way you can schedule to save a subreddit when you have a connection, for viewing offline later.

It started as a quarantine project written in Flutter, to experiment more with the framework. Well it then grew bigger than expected because I just kept fleshing it out and adding more features. I also took my time writing and rewriting parts of the app where needed. Now it's a fleshed out Reddit app that's mostly usable as a daily driver. It's also a nice portfolio piece I think since I'm also looking for a job.

Not only do you have to deal with unscrupulous immoral and illegal savagery during market hours, you have to wonder if everyone you meet is a shill. Fortunately these shills are not immortal beings from a galaxy far far away, but mere humans who employ a system they've adopted. A system which I'm going to do my best to attempt to explain and demystify for the betterment of our humble community. I like Harry Potter, this is basically Defense Against the Dark Arts, and the term 'Dark Apes' just jumped out at me. I hope that term doesn't offend anyone. I hesitated using it. I'm not saying that any apes are shills. I'm saying shills learned to become apes. And it's helpful to look at it from this perspective so you can grasp the rest of the concepts they employ. They've evolved. They learned the ways of the ape and essentially built a nefarious copy cat model. They can now speak the ape language and a lot of FUD is getting through undetected because apes are on the lookout for only the most obvious shills. Ape sees something that resembles what a fellow ape would post, ape say 'seems legit' and allows it through the barrier of 'New' to the road of 'Rising' all the way to the mountain peak of 'Hot'. Shills are now able to be apes in disguise using dark arts. Hence, Dark Apes. And since there's so many of them, it would be impossible to keep a list of 'who's a shill' in mind. I'd imagine there to be multiple groups of them formed in teams, competing against each other for rewards and bonuses on the amount of FUD they spread. However the shill social structure may actually be formed, if you're a shill tasked with a job of spreading FUD and targeting individual apes who appear vulnerable to a shift in opinion, you're going to need a system in place so that you don't waste time spreading FUD to one of your shill brethren by accident lol They do it by recognizing language patterns and the narrative they're paid to spin. And many will award without even reading this part predicting it. If you ever found yourself wondering 'Why the fuck does this post have so many awards and people didn't even read it yet' Well this is why. Because hype. Because long post. Because memes. Because emotional trigger at the beginning. Because the tiny portion of information you received from the initial scroll down seemed legit. This is how Dark Apes can use your hype against you. Writing long ass posts with verifiable information and funny memes to anchor authority and relatability to their username and then slip in a few minor FUD things that will go consciously unnoticed, yet subconsciously internalized. For example, I have absolutely no idea whether or not Natural Language Processing was named NLP to obfuscate search results. I made it up. But because I did it in a side note with all the other shit, you likely shrugged it off and thought 'Ohh shit! Seems like something they would do!' taking it as fact lol Even if you are in the Machine Learning field and thought that was stupid, it opened up the question 'Wait.. really? No way..'. And the only goal to FUD is to make you question. To make you say 'Hmm...maybe...'. If you find yourself initially reacting negatively to something but then saying 'Hmm.. maybe..' That means a Dark Ape has done their job. And as you're distracted thinking about a boat or what ever bullshit visual pictures I'm painting, you take what I said as fact and continue reading without realizing you've been hypnotized. Further interrupting your train of thought by layering or 'nesting' multiple side notes and stories together. Effectively 'Open Looping' you. I give you a bit of information, and divert your attention to another thing and another thing and on and on and your brain NEEDS closure on all these things so it reads more to find out the conclusion. That's why you see so many videos marketing a product or service telling a story and then saying 'I'll get to the answer to that question in a minute. BUT first.......' That's an open loop.) ..products in your mind when you think of a product or service. Band-Aid for example. People just call all bandages 'Band-aids' even if they're not created by that company. This sort of branding is used everywhere. And many people probably went up to read the bold text at the top to remember what this bold text at the bottom was saying because I fed you so much information it was hard to keep up. And by the time you reach the next paragraph, you'll probably have to do the same thing to keep up with the main story. And for those whohaven'tstruggled to keep up, this bit explaining it diverts your attention further by filling up your mental ram with more things you need to conceptualize at one time. Congrats fucker, you gotopen looped.) -------------------------------------- (4th wall break: Take this moment to shake off the stress. If you read through that whole thing up to now, you likely gained a few wrinkles and are disoriented. It's okay to be like 'holy shit', stare at the wall for a moment, maybe re-read up a bit to catch your bearings and continue reading the main story.-------------------------------------- Main story continued: Meticulously breaking down the beginning of this post. I used the Fry sus meme. A well known meme that conveys 'sus' by considering two choices. 'Not sure if this or that.' And I modified the structure of the meme from simple text to a long drawn out message and kept the text right under Fry's eye level. Which is sort of suffocating him in world-wind of thought, yet still keeping that 'sus' squinty eye motif. It disrupts your senses because you're not used to so many words on that meme and so it puts your brain into focus mode. Narrowing your focus to be able to read every word. As you continue reading, you find that it accurately describes a year's worth of research + a year's worth of FUD into one meme. The text underneath it says 'Whoa that's a lot of words for a meme' and it's probably what you were thinking so you laugh or roll your eyes not realizing that I trapped you into a thought box. It interrupts the pattern you were building saying 'What the fuck, why so many words' and destresses you by saying 'hey I know, don't worry lol'. And that creates relatability. The wall of text gets spammed into your brain, which has been trained to filter out FUD and bullshit. It's essentially a DOS attack on the brain. Usually you're more careful when you read things so as to not fall for an opinion trap. But all these things being thrown at you, the visual, the amount of information, the trip down memory lane, the annoyance of how many words were used, and then the final emotional rug pull that said 'I knew what you were thinking' makes it so hard for your brain to filter anything out. So you end up internalizing every word and without realizing it, forming an opinion the next time you encounter a similar scenario. Which influences your thoughts and actions and lowers your guard. If I didn't explain it so in depth, you might have walked away from this post with your guard lowered just a tiny bit. Thinking 'Oh maybe that guy who posted that thing on Twitter isn't actually a shill, he's just an idiot. Let me educate him because he's just a misinformed ape' So you'll sit there hashing it out with him going back and forth typing.... ------------------------ (Side note: Again I forced your brain to do something I wanted it to do. I conjured up a scenario for your brain to play out like a movie. A memory maybe or a vision of the futureyou, scrolling on Twitter and reacting to a shill post. For my tactic though, you look at the Computershared Lambo and get all hyped while anchoring a subtle subtext of 'Thabat' next to something that triggers an emotional response in your brain. But in reality, I could use a bunch of bots to spam photoshopped bat ears or some othercute cartoon animal onto memes, along with quotes of things I've said to brand myself as an authority. A master shill already did this. And if I did my job properly, that cute fluffy animal should pop up in your mind without me even saying who. And it's just now dawning on you and you're like 'Ohh shit wow that makes sense'. That's another tactic they employ. It's powerful. Explaining something in such a way that evokes a picture in your mind but not actually saying it. Or if they do say something, they'll hint towards an idea then back off of it. And if you've been following along so far, you'd probably realize that just by mentioning something casually and reasonably backing off of it, I'm planting the idea in your mind. And that gives me leeway if someone calls me out on it. Someone calling me out:'Hey you were saying this or that' Me:'No, I backed off of it. I didn't say this or that. I just brought it up casually and it's not my actual opinion. I just want you to think of this or that'. Sort of like if someone mentions price is going to spike during a certain week and then talk about buying call options. BUT saying not to buy call options for that certain week that it's going to spike. Saying instead to buy longer call options for February. They 'backed off' of the idea they wanted you to consider. And then they or their shill bros can come and say 'NOOO THATS NOT WHAT I / HE SAID. If you bought for that week like we hypnotized you to do, then you're an idiot!!!'... Yeah bullshit lmao The way they all presented it got you to form your own conclusion to buy cheaper calls for that week. And then fucking rug pull like I predicted. I wanted that game more than anything in the world. They promised so much, I felt it was gonna be better than reality itself lmaooo Random Cyberpunk meme just to fill the post out because most people only half read and will scroll down, see memes and post 'Commenting for visibility' lmao.. shill tactic. Using meme hype against you. And then an hour into it I'm like uhhhhh what the fuck is this. I finished the game just because I had so much hype, I had to finish it. But I still got a refund because it was terrible. The story was good BUT look how I'm distracting you again with another common relatable experience. You only hype something up if you feel pulling it out and laying it on the table isn't good enough as it is.) Any time I posted something that went viral, I didn't hype anything. I just whipped it out and said 'Here. Take it.' And it was good enough on it's own that it gained traction because people shared it. Beyoncé didn't advertise one of her albums and it still blew up because it was just fucking good on it's own. Ask yourself 'What is their real motive?'. Because anyone HYPING something has a rug pull in mind somewhere. Somehow. Why? BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE TO HYPE SOMETHING IF IT'S AMAZING. It'll speak for itself. I hyped this post on Twitter as an example so I could say it now. Hyping and pre-marketing things before release is a shill tactic. To create a buzz. To imply there's a time limit to something so you remember it. It's an anchoring technique EVEN FUCKING GAMESTOP.. That guy who calls himself SMRT hype baited us to buy merch with a tweet about the NFT without mentioning the NFT but knowing we all were hyped about it. He hype baited us. I trust Gamestop as a company just a tiny bit less because of that. And before you get all riled up... SHORTS HAVE NOT COVERED. 2+2 = 4. THEY MUST COVER. It's math. But that math has nothing to do with Gamestop using ape's hype to sell merch. Ryan Cohen's plan is to turn the company around using OUR FUCKING HYPE as the catalyst for the transformation. WITHOUT APE HYPE THERE IS NO TRANSFORMATION. Shorts are fucking us on the stock and Gamestop is fucking us on the merch. EVERYONE IS TRYING TO FUCK THE APES ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. Maybe this type of Dark Ape doesn't start out as a shill. Maybe they genuinely have good intentions in the beginning. BUT they gain so much attention that they become a target for hedgies to bribe or threaten. People look up to us. People tag us in comments for wrinkles. People want more of our brains. Well, that can be leveraged by hedge funds. If I were a shill, I could easily get people to paper hand. Maybe not the hardest diamond hand rock solid HODLers.. But I could get a large majority who are weak in their resolve. And so could Gherk, so could Criand. So could whoever. If they do it skillfully. Over a long period of time. Subtly spread FUD and mindfuck people to come to their own conclusion that this might take longer than they expected and rent is due now lol It's possible. 4th Wall Break: That last paragraph was designed to enrage you to comment 'NO ONE CAN GET ME TO SELL! Hey everyone, I'm Tom from Pine Studio. I'm the team lead on Escape Simulator, our escape room game that is playable in co-op and features an editor for building and sharing custom rooms. As the title says, the game just passed $4M in gross sales in less than two months of being released on Steam. And that's just wild! As we're self-published and under no NDA, I wanted to share more about the success of the game :) How DID we do it?Basics
You can do a lot of things on a shoestring budget. But some things are worth the money, like hiring a good PR firm and getting a pro trailer. I think you should spend cash on this. If you don't have the money, start with smaller projects and save up some. Marketing accounted for 6% of our overall development budget.You also need to have a good game. The only way to do that is if you have a great team. At this point in our nine-year existence, this is the moment when I feel I'm working in a team that gets stuff done without much fluff and is completely focused on the same goal.
Zeitgeist
The world is still in a strange period. The pandemic caused a lot of success for select games in 2020. And I think we managed to catch on to some of that player behavior change. Our goal wasn't to design a game for people who can't hang out in real life, as we started working on it a year before all the craziness. But having co-op as one of the core features was a big push for the game.Things that don't scale
We tried a lot of different 'guerilla' marketing stuff. And we've seen good results from some of it. For example, we reached out to developers of similar games and tried to have them do a promo on our game. This ended up working well. It involved talking to many developers and having some super interesting discussions. I mean, they are making similar games to yours, and if that's not somebody you can talk to, who is :P.Other than that, we tried to use unique features to our advantage. With the help of our PR, we pitched that we would create tailor-made rooms in our level editor for select channels. Some responded, we made the rooms, and they ended up covering our game! The bonus was that we tested the heck out of the editor.
When it came to pricing, we had endless discussions. It was comical how often players asked us what the game's price was, and we just said we couldn't share. And it was like that till the last week before release. So why was it so hard?
- We have a co-op game, and we want it not to be expensive for multiple people to buy the game.
- Then you don't want to price it too low, so you actually earn something.
- And then there was this idea in our heads that we wanted to sell as many copies as we could on launch even if we had to go super low.
Flexibility
We're a very pragmatic team, and we question things that are 'good practice' a lot. For example, Escape Simulator started development as AR mobile game. Yeah. Not as crazy as the time we pivoted a match-3 game into a professor Layton-style game (that's a story for another time). We decided that we have a better chance on Steam, and it is a more accessible platform to develop for. We still refer to some interaction parts that we had in touch interface as our win32 parts of the code.Bravery
We invested most of our profits from previous games into this game. And we managed to self-finance it and not run out of money. And that's a hard thing to do because if you looked at Steam, there is not really a game like ours. There are escape games, but none of them have the budget and the scope of the Escape Simulator.I think this is the reason why all publishers (we talked with all the major ones) said NO to the game. They were all very nice, and my guess is that they just couldn't find the anchor in the market where they could estimate how the game would do. A major benefit we got from those meetings was lots of feedback about the game. And we always asked to get details and further opinions. Then we took that feedback and implemented it all :)
We did have a secret anchor, not on Steam but on mobile. Based on our old projects, we knew that this game with our budget should recoup within a year if done right on App Store and Google Play.
One interesting fact: at launch, we had 60k wishlists, a respectable number, but not crazy in the festival age. We also had very low followers: 2.5k. If you read any of the articles and look at the bar charts about how this would convert into sales, you would get depressed. They say followers are more quality than just plain wishlists, etc. Well, we sold 1:1 our wishlists at launch. My theory is that different audiences wishlist differently. For example, a casual puzzle co-op player doesn't click to follow the game.
MVP
You often hear about Minimum Viable Product, and Escape Simulator goes against the grain there. Minimum viable Escape Simulator would NOT have: room editor, character models, support for more than two players in multiplayer, etc.But I think that because it's not MVP, there is so much more to do in the game. We don't think about it in the mobile retention metrics kind of way, but just in what kind of activities our players can do. They can solve puzzles alone, they can hang out with friends, and they can be creative. All of this makes it an easier sell.
Don't get me wrong, feature creep is a horrible thing, and you need to stay mostly on time and not implement every aspect of the exciting new feature.
Demo Festivals
You have to be aware of your platform and use it to your advantage. Last year, due to the pandemic, the main thing on Steam was to get into festivals. And, oh boy, there were a ton. Some festivals don't have a dedicated Steam front page featuring, and if you only care about wishlists, you're free to avoid those. Those that do, you need to be there. Not all of them are created equal, and the ones with lots of games will probably bring you fewer wishlists, still most of the time, it's worth it.We did mess things up here. We had the game on the official Steam festival way too early. The demo still had low poly John Wick lookalikes as temp characters. So we didn't get selected for any featuring. It still did quite well in wishlists, but not as well as other games. Later, we had festivals that netted us more wishlists than the official festival! Also, once you attend, you can't go to the Steam festival again for a year.
All in all, we got a large number of wishlists there.
Post Release
Initially, we planned to ship the game with 20 rooms, but after getting closer to the release, we realized that we wouldn't be making it in time. We already had PR scheduled, and the end of the year was approaching, so we had to make the deadline. So we decided to cut five rooms. This meant less content for the game. However, having it in an almost finished state gave us an excellent content update post-release. Since we had that available, we scheduled a Steam sale to go with the update. It did super well.Another thing we planned to do before release was a room-making competition with cash prizes. We always knew we'd like to do that but never got around to it before release. When the game launched, we looked at the sales and concurrent player numbers and noticed a dip and a downward trend. To combat that, we decided to go into the weekend with the competition. That made the workshop numbers jump like crazy, and the game got some great rooms. It sparked a fantastic creator community that's still with the game and helped with sale numbers.
Fun facts / Random
- We had to sell complete Steam rights for our old mobile game to finance PR.
- Some info on the web says not to put an 'indie' tag on your Steam game - wrong. It's much easier for your game to break Top Seller in that tag and get extra views. Just put it at the end of your list.
- If you launch close to a sale, Valve can extend your launch discount into a seasonal sale. We did it on one of our old games but forgot on this one… Inscryption/Devolver had the same launch date as us and were smarter. :P
- Our review numbers don't even closely match how many sales we have (compared to the range on SteamDB). No idea why, probably a different audience again.
- No major game news portal covered our game. But lots of streamers did.
- Our company started by making small escape room games in Flash while we were still in college. We made over 40 of them back then.
TL;DR
Build a good game with enough features to captivate your players. The co-op is good. Get into festivals on Steam. Get some cross-promo from similar games. Get some paid PR. Fight.submitted byps_Tomtogamedev [link][comments]

Additionally I think being on any kind of opinionated subreddit (or just on the internet in general) is like being in a bubble, all the people are gonna echo what you want to hear and this makes us distant from people with any other opinions as ours.
So I think its important that we listen and discuss things with people who we disagree with because its an important part of learning from and understanding others, which will help us being less divided as a society.

I see where they're going with this. If you don't have sex, you can't catch a disease.I just saw this jubilee video and I think this part sums it up really well.
Some people will have sex no matter what so why not educate them about how to do it safely, and sure give them the option for abstinence as well. There are so many ways of protection today, I'm sure everyone would find something that fits them.
I understand that couples, girls especially, stress a lot about how effective their protection method of choice is but if you want that piece of mind there are other things to try not just abstinence.
You could combine 2 highly effective methods (condom + pill for example) which would make it statistically very unlikely that you would ever get pregnant.
Another thing is that there are methods available today that are highly effective and you don't even need to stress about taking a pill every day.
Yes, none of them are perfect but its already at a really good rate and it will only get better as science progresses.
How effective is contraception at preventing pregnancy?
I want to add to this that I've been having regular sex with my gf for 3 years now, and she didn't become pregnant thanks to a low hormone contraceptive. I'm only saying this because looking at the 99% effectiveness can look like after 100 intercourse on average you're gonna become pregnant but that's just not how it is.
I'm not trying to invalidate these studies. I just want to say that religious people that are part of a church are (I think) more likely to feel the pressure to not get divorced so they are more likely get stuck in a bad marriage which is arguably worse then getting divorced. So I think the rate of divorce isn't the best indicator to begin with.
The same goes for cheating, people will feel more pressure if they are part of a church not to cheat which I agree is a good thing.

Research has repeatedly demonstrated the importance of maintaining an active and satisfying sexual relationship with your partner (see the readings listed below), and our research suggests that this may be especially important for people who are inclined to desire casual sex.If anything this paragraph shows that sex before marriage doesn't necessarily lead to a bad marriage. And I think its important to realize someone who isn't saving sex for marriage doesn't mean they are looking for casual sex, these things aren't black and white.
A lot of people desire sex in a relation ship early on but that doesn't mean this is all the relationship is for them, its just one part of it, which when done safely is just a great thing that should not be villainized.
If everyone waited until marriage to have sex, every baby born into the world would have a loving and nurturing environment in which to grow up.To say this, is just absurd. I don't want to generalize so I'll just speak for myself:
In my current relationship I didn't want to work on the problems (small ones too) because we've had enough counter balance of good things (like sex) that made it harder for me to try to work on the bad aspects because it was good enough already but problems can't go undiscussed in a relationship is what I had to find out the hard way.

This can be seen as some what of a personal preference, or something you just born with, which I can agree with. Some people tend to be jealous because of their past experiences and they have a right to do so. It may apply to me to some extent, I'm not sure yet.
On the other hand It might be that you need to trust the other person more and understand that its the past, but I won't blame you if you can't do that. However I do long for a relationship where none of us is jealous for the other because we trust each other that much.

The goal of day trading is to take advantage of volatility. The same stock isn't going to be volatile every single day of the week. Realistically a single ticker, might only have 4 or 5 volatile days per year. Of course there are outliers(think MRNA, TSLA, AMZN,etc). By focusing on only a few stocks you are going to miss a lot of opportunities. Image if GME wasn't on your magical list back in January. You would have missed the biggest trade of the year!

China has way more leverage over Chinese companies then an American company with factories there. If push comes to shove with contradictory laws between the US and China the Chinese company will side with China, and the US company will side with America. For Normal calls/puts executing the option instead of selling to close will always net you less due to not recovering your premium paid. Instead you're using the contract for yourself, to buy the 100 shares, the ~$600/contract paid is gone. But, you bought TSLA stock well below the existing price so your profit is only that differential (say the contract was for $500, so each share you made $500, or 500k with all 100 shares. If you just sold to close, the contract value will have this differential baked in, including any time left on the contract, etc. This is where instead of 500k you maybe made 510k for selling the contract, or if a lot of time is available, could be more like 600k+. Even with 5 minutes left in the trading day, you'll get more for that contract than buying the stock. Obviously in the long run executing on something you wanted to add to your portfolio anyways is a good idea, just not if you're simply looking to make the most money from it. Edit: Elon was granted these options as compensation from TSLA, so the whole premium thing and contract execution is out the window. Either way he'd have to 'cash in' those shares and by selling shares he's paid for the taxes on the rest. Almost like an RSU, when a percentage of your vested shares are sold off to pay the taxes, depending how you set it up.

Not at once but I bought them in that order and sold and repeated the process with profits. Woke up a bit too late but I saw the momentum and hopped in around 8am PST and had a wild fucking ride. Edit: I should say that don't get enticed by these gain posts. It's not something you should trade if you aren't prepared to literally lose 60% in minutes. I saw my calls fluctuate a few thousand profit to a few thousand in losses so many times. It's gut wrenching and very stressful. So don't play with money you can't stomach losing entirely. It's easy to panic and sell when you see the negatives pile up but you gotta understand with TSLA 0/1DTEs can swing either way really hard and fast. I got greedy af at one point and lost thousands of unrealized gains and settled for hundreds instead like a true cuck.

Final Fight with Insight
Before the move, my STBX and I had one last argument. But in this argument a big piece of information was leaked on his behalf. He demanded to know why we failed as partners. I'm not sure why he is asking me why we failed if he is the one that cheated.. I gave him the same reasoning I gave him months ago when we talked about this. He said that answer was bullshit. How can my opinion or insight be bullshit? Let me explain. My STBX and I were great; before kids and responsibilities. But when other people (our children) and responsibilities (work, bills, house upkeep) came into play things changed. Honestly, he didn't like that our honeymoon phase was over. That's what he loves the most and why his shiny new relationship is so appealing. He didn't like that our money for nights out now went to plumbers, school clothes and the gas bill. Was this another case of being a narcissist and needing all the attention? Perhaps so. Could I have done better to make him a priority? Probably, but then something else of importance would have been neglected. Perhaps if he would have helped me carry the load and took more responsibility there would be more time for us. I was the parent that went to every school function, I took the kids food shopping with me on a Saturday so he could have some relax time, I made all the meals, I did the doctor appointments, I called the repair men, I bought the clothing, I cut coupons, I tended to sick children, I gave baths, I made plans to visit his family, etc. Long story short; the list of responsibilities he had was minimal or close to nonexistent. I just always thought we would (more like I would) sacrifice and work now only to relax and enjoy later. Maybe that was my mistake. But I showed my love for him daily and always did for him. I did more so he could do less and enjoy his free time and be happy and relaxed. Because when he was stressed, the whole house was tense. But thats a story for another day...
What this conversation did shed light on was his reasoning for talking to her. The reason I suspected; attention. He confessed she gave him attention whenever he wanted it. Everything was about him. Sure, that's easy to do when your relationship is simply text messages and phone calls. But what happens when it's real and daily? I asked him what happens when he moves there and she starts putting her children first? Or her work becomes a priority? Or they struggle with bills? You know, real life and all. He had no answers. I asked what happens when this fantasy long distance romance becomes a tough, daily reality. Again, I don't think he thought that far in advance. Can he stay on his best boyfriend behavior? Can everything stay magical when the world stops revolving around him/them? Looks like he will find out soon enough.
I understand I will probably receive criticism for this post. People will say I neglected him so he had no other option but to leave. But let's not over look the fact that he neglected everything in our life so the slack was mine. This story is not new. Some spouses have been doing this for ages. And what is their reward? The spouse they tried so desperately to give a 'better' life to leaves/cheats. Is this manipulation? Is this me trying so hard to make everything easier for everyone else that I sabotage myself? All I wanted was an equal partner, but that's something that I never got.
Mediation Meltdown
So after weeks, no, correction, months, our mediation paperwork is completed. What a relief...or so I thought. While we had talked previously and agreed to everything there was one section we never mentioned which our mediator added. It reads as follows:
'New Partners: Each part agrees that they will introduce a new partner to the children only if he/she is in a committed relationship for at least ___ months. Each parent will inform the other party prior to introducing a new partner to the children.'
While that wasn't something that was discussed I think thats an important piece of the puzzle. My STBX does not think that statement needs to be included in our legal agreement. His statement was, 'That's a conversation between you and I that a court or judge has no business being in'. While I see his point, my point was this: we are divorcing. Nothing can be left to a handshake promise. We could agree to something verbally and because we both have legal custody we could re-neg on the agreement and deny access to new partners. Having this in black and white protects us both. He swore he wasn't signing it until that portion was removed. But if the mediator included it, then this must be common practice to do in a divorce. So this prompted me to ask, 'When does she plan to come here to visit?' That must be the motivation, right? She must be planning a trip here soon and he had plans to introduce her to the kids. He claims there are no plans for her to visit our area. Well, if that's the case, whats the harm with waiting 3 months?
But let me be clear, to everyone reading, my motivation in this is the well being of my children. Their father has just left. They need to become accustomed to this new was of life with 2 homes and visiting hours before we complicate things more with a girlfriend or boyfriend. I've also made appointments for them next month (that was the soonest I could get) with a psychologist to help them process this divorce. Now is not the time to make this more complex. Every parent wants to nurture and protect their children. His AP waited 5 months to introduce him to her children; why is it not ok for us to wait too then?
Changes
I had to sit down this past week and really think. What is more important to me, my pride or moving on? I said from the beginning that I want him to be a father, to be involved and active in their lives. So, we made some changes last night. After a talk, plus an argument, followed by more talking we altered our custody agreement to give him more time with the kids. I know from the past 10 years that he has never been an active father. Perhaps now he feels the need to be? Either way, I'm hopeful this decision will be a good one for the boys.
Now I know many of you may say he is undeserving but I am making this decision and not regretting it because I know it is temporary. He will be moving in a year or so. Of this, I have no doubt. Once he packs up his belongings and he drives across the country our arrangement will change. I'm a bit upset the children will become used to having him around only to have him leave in a year. That was a big motivator in my reluctance to agree to this custody change. I have tried to make the best decisions for my boys and I feel like my STBX is just concerned with 'winning'. I also got him to agree to put our new terms and terms for when he leaves (including the altered CS payments) in black and white in our mediation paperwork.
I think the delay by our mediator to supply the paperwork lead to him overthinking and wanting to change the agreement. He agreed in January but now claims he never agreed to it. So I guess our mediator just created these terms which we discussed out of thin air? Ok, sure buddy. I also think his girlfriend chirped in his ear a bit about what he should do. I'm confident he told her what a wonderful and involved father he has been over the years and I'm sure that prompted her to encourage him for more custody. Little does she know my STBX doesn't even have car seats in his car because he never takes them anywhere. He doesn't know their doctor's names. He doesn't know their quirks and he has zero patience for them. But I'm sure he has claimed to be 'father of the year'. Maybe the increase in custody will prompt him to move sooner? He took the boys for an over night last week and when he dropped them off he was grumpy. He claimed all he did was cater to them, didn't have time to eat and barely got any work done all day. Oh, you mean like me everyday since you left? He's not prepared. But it's ok, I'm done sheltering him. These are your kids and now you can see what it takes to care for them and balance everyday life. Maybe now he will see why I never had the time or energy to cater to him.
Boundaries
Last week was our final, final mediation meeting. My STBX claims that the mediation we had in January was not the final. I was happy that our mediator confirmed in the meeting that January's meeting was the final and his changes are an addition. Either way, it's done. Mediation completed. Now starts the actual divorce process. I told him that I'd like to start this ASAP and his response was, 'I know you want to rush through this but this takes time and can't be done when you want it to be done.' So hold on, let me get this straight. You were the one who cheated for months and has a girlfriend, but me wanting to complete our divorce paperwork makes me the one that is rushing to end the marriage? No, sir. You have rushed to end it. Actually, you ended it. Now we are just completing the paperwork but the marriage was dissolved in September when you started sending her flowers. Or perhaps in October when you started flying to her state during a pandemic to have sex. So pardon me if I'd like to cut the cord legally. You have already severed it emotionally.
Even though we aren't legally divorced he has been taking the kids 3-4 nights a week on a rotating schedule. Truth be told, I'm happy he is stepping up but my children don't like it. When I tell them they are going to daddy's they cry. Because my ex lives in an apartment building and my children have grown up in a single family home; my oldest son call's his apartment a hotel, not a house. When they are there they miss me and I feel terrible. On one of their first evenings there my youngest called me from his ipad 4 times. I wanted to give them space to be with their dad but after the 5th phone call, I answered. My STBX was on the computer working (he showed me on the video call) and my youngest was left in his room to play. He was bored and seeking attention. I told him to play with daddy when he was done with his call and I would see them soon. After we hung up I got an angry text from my ex telling me we need to practice boundaries when we have the children and respect each other's time with them. The children were now asking him when they come home. He said (to me) this is their home as well and they should know that. A few things about this: 1. If you were paying attention to the kids they would not call me. I understand you are working but I work from home as well and they are NEVER calling you while I am here. I have to tell the kids to call you and even then they don't want to. 2. Boundaries? You have been coming to the house every night on my days to say good night to them. So you can come to my home and see them for 45 minutes every night but I can't answer my son's 5th phone call to me? Here's some boundaries, you can't come here anymore. He is very regretful he brought up this argument because it hurts him more than me. I have no problems playing fair, but you have to play as well. 3. If you want YOUR kids to feel like your house is their home as well, then you need to tell THEM not ME. Ok, I get it, but they don't. So you need to have that conversation with them, not me. Ive just resolved myself to the fact that I will always be the bad guy.
The Gymnast
I've always been flexible. Well, physically not so much with age, but flexible in situations has never been a problem. My STBX fought me on a 50/50 custody agreement. One in which I agreed to. Our original agreement was for a 65/35 split which gave him every other weekend plus a few dinner time visits in between. For someone who has never been an active father this should have been enough. Apparently now he thinks he's super dad and wishes to take the lead. This would have been helpful years ago, but better late than never. He contacts me the other day telling me he will be picking up the kids for 2 overnights this week. Mind you, he is supposed to have the kids 2 days on one week and then 5 days the next week. I tell him that he can have the kids over the weekend as well. This is when he tells me he has several work trips and personal trip (to see his girlfriend) coming up so he needs me to be flexible with the visits.
Flexible? I thought you were the 'I need to see my kids more' dad now. The dad who needed more time (and less time & child support for me) with his children. Where did that guy go? The month of April he has had the kids for 8 nights total. TOTAL. And when I mention this isn't 50/50 I'm the bad guy and need to be understanding to his work and personal life. Excuse me, I have work and a personal life too. well, not really a personal life but I hope too soon! Why do I have to be flexible to you and you aren't to me? I told him I offered him the 65/35 split that would allow him more free time for work/pleasure and he didn't want it. He said I was steamrolling him into taking that agreement and he wasn't happy with the time he'd have with the kids. Touched that he wanted more time with the kids, I agreed to this and now that it's in black and white I have to have the kids more and receive less child support because you can't keep up with the deal YOU wanted? I think in all honesty it wasn't about seeing his kids; it was about not giving me what I asked for. He says I rely too much on our agreement and that it's just a guideline; we don't need to live and die by it. Ummmm, but I think we do. It's a legal document about our children and our assets. So if we don't live and die by it will you stop paying child support? Or maybe decide that you want things that are mine? It's just a piece of paper, right? For a man who lead a double life, had an affair, has a girlfriend, and wanted out of this house; he sure doesn't seem to want to face the reality of what a divorce actually is. So if he doesn't take the kids for his 50/50 visits what are my options? Start this process again with another agreement? Take him to court? I think perhaps my best option is to NOT be flexible and when they numbers don't add up we go back to court. I don't see any other option..
Transparency
This past weekend was Mother's Day. It was a strange day this year but still oddly more enjoyable than previous years. My STBX has been taking the kids on the schedule I created and so far, no issues. He has yet to pay me any child support but I will give him till the 15th till I make a stink about that. The boys were with him over the weekend but he returned them on Sunday so I could spend the day with them. I asked him while he was here if he called his grandmother yet. His grandmother is the only family (besides his equally unfaithful father) that he speaks to. He told me he spoke to her and that he told her that we have separated. I was shocked. This was a big one. I knew it would be hard to tell her and the news would give her a heart attack. He said she was upset and shared some of their conversation with me. He told me he did not tell her why we split, only that we had. While not the whole truth, I was happy to see that he took this tough step.
Fast forward a few hours later. His mother calls me. Her and I have a fairly good relationship but my STBX is holding a grudge over things from the past and refuses to speak to her. I had asked if she heard the news from her mother. She was confused. Well, it turns out it was all a lie. He never told his grandmother. The conversation he said he had was never actually had. I speak to his sister as well and find out after 13 years together, that this 'run away with a girl who'll give me more attention' is his MO. She told me that before me he lied to his girlfriend of 4 years that he was going to spend time with his dad and it turns out he went away for the weekend with another girl. Now ain't that some shit...
My lawyer will be serving him the divorce papers next week. When I told him for the 2nd time that I was hiring a lawyer to do that papers and did not want us to do them ourselves he got angry. He accused me of wanting to try something shady. No, sir. You have been shady enough for the both of us. When I reminded him that I've already brought this up to him and that I have been getting quotes from lawyers he accused me of 'not being transparent'. You're kidding right? He will always be the victim, never wrong and always right.
The Breakdown
My STBX had the children this past Friday-Saturday and then again Monday-Wednesday. I went to pick them up today after work and that's went it happened; the breakdown. My STBX started to cry. He lost it. Apparently, for the past 3 days all our children did was ask to go home. They cried and constantly asked 'how long'. He tried to tell them that this was their home as well but they wouldn't hear of it. Now part of me feels badly. It must be terrible to have your children reject you. But on the flip side, he's never been the parent he is now. He takes them places, plays with them, reads to them, bathes them, etc. I don't think he understands that you can't just flip a switch with these kids and they will gravitate towards you. I know he is trying, and I appreciate that, but it's too little too late. I have tried to be supportive and understand them having a father is important; but I honestly don't think they want him. Again, they are both under 10 and young, they don't fully understand. My oldest asked me on the ride home if they could never go back. When I explained that we are both parents, love them, and want to spend equal time with them, both children protested.
I think my STBX realizes this is too little, too late. He is regretful. I don't know how to make this situation easier for everyone; but honestly, it's not my problem to solve. I asked him to take a 35/65 split but he rejected it saying it wasn't enough time with the children. My suggestion of that split wasn't about me wanting more; it was about what I thought our children could handle. He just wanted to 'win' and get me to convert to a 50/50 split. Welp, you won! Here it is! How's that working out for you? Maybe if you would have thought about what was best for them and not 'defeating' me maybe this would have ended differently.
A Summer Situation
After his breakdown I didn't contact him for awhile. I knew he needed time to cool off and if I talked to him for any reason I was afraid he would get angry with me or even worse, confide in me. I wanted neither. So when I finally did need to speak to him he told me, 'we need to figure out what we are going to do this summer'. What are we doing? We are doing nothing. I was confused. He told me it's going to be impossible for him to handle the kids during the summer while he is working. He said he was 'barely holding on by a thread' as it is now. This isn't a problem we faced in the past, as I'm a teacher and off all summer so I handle the kids 100% during summer months. I don't think he took the summer into consideration when he demanded 50/50 physical custody. So his suggestion was to enroll the children in a camp when he has them. A camp? So you want to enroll our children in a camp from 8-6 on the days you have them? How is that spending time with them? So, my suggestion was let's do the 35/65 split for July and August and he can have the kids weekends and see them in the evening whenever he wants. He was FURIOUS. 'It's always about custody with you', he said. Wait, wait, wait. This isn't about custody. You just said you can't handle them. I'm offering to give up the first real summer vacation I've ever had to keep them to help YOU and I'm the bad guy here??? Make this make sense. He claims the kids need to socialize. In the past 9 years he has NEVER cared if the children socialized, but now it's a big deal? This was the man who rolled his eyes and complained about having to go to a kids birthday party for 3 hours...
So I left it alone. Let him sit on the thought for a bit. A few days later to be proactive I sent him information about summer camps....along with price lists. It would cost between $250-350 a week for camp. The camps I found are only for 5 weeks leaving most of August without childcare for him. How does this help? How is this spending time with the kids? Putting our children in an expensive weekly camp (during covid) just so you can give them dinner, bath and put them to bed doesn't help them or your relationship with them. My family owns a house by the beach. I will be down there most of the summer with kids. When I'm home, we have friends we can visit and at least we have a yard at our house for the children to play in. The children will be happy, socialize with family and friends and most importantly, be safer with me than in a camp.
Lastly, I will add that he has yet to pay me child support for April and May. He moved out in March, took the kids for 8 overnights in April (it should have been 15) and has yet to give me a dime for April and May. But he can afford almost $1300 in camp fees just to have his 'custody'? Even more proof that his actions are not about what's best for the kids, it's just a competition with me. Get the Papers...The Papers
I'm officially in the court system, with a docket number and everything! It on its way to becoming official and I em elated. My STBX does not seem that excited. This past weekend he flew out to her state and attended a family wedding as her guest. I'm happy they are taking these steps as a couple because if they are happy he will move and the farther away he is the better! When he returned he was now excited about the divorce. Asking me when the lawyer would send him paperwork to sign and what the timeline was moving forward. He was on cloud 9 after his vacation and wished to hurry the process up. The day he was having his share of paperwork notarized was also the day I was going to pick up the children from him. When I got there he was short with me; I could tell he was on the verge of a panic attack. He hurried us away and then text me later explaining he in fact was in the beginning stages of a panic attack. But why?
He told me he was feeling overwhelmed. Between the kids, work, managing a household and maintaining a social life he felt burnt out. WOW! This sounds oddly familiar. This was my story for the past 10 years. The reason I didn't go on date nights as often as he liked was for this exact reason. Part of me felt bad because I know what that feeling is like. But another part of me relished the thought of his struggling and coming to the realization that that was my life and reason for his cheating. So, how should I react? After I took a second to think I blurted, 'Wow that sucks. I'm taking the kids to the beach this weekend. See you Monday morning when you pick them up!' I decided to give him the support he gave me for 10 years.

D-Day
Sunday it's happening. The day I've been waiting for and he has been dreading. I'm going to meet the girlfriend. I'm honestly excited. He on the other hand is in a panic. And I understand why, I exploded on that woman on the phone and said some terrible things. And I also understand it's going to be hard for him to hide his lies about me being insane when we are face to face. He text me a few days ago and told me that he would be picking the boys up on Father's Day to head down the shore with them and she would be accompanying them. When they come to pick up the boys we can have a chat. I'm fine with that. I'm actually relieved he wasn't planning on taking the boys to the shore alone; I don't think he can handle them both on the boardwalk or in arcades.
He is very worried that I will cause a scene when I meet her. It's actually the exact opposite. I plan on being myself, very friendly and welcoming. I need her to see I'm not that emotional woman that I was on the phone and in my letter. I mentioned to him via text that I would not jeopardize the good relationship he and I have had recently with each other and co parenting by being mean to her. His exact words, 'I don't need you to speak about what you and I have.' But why? Why wouldn't the fact that we are getting along and coparenting be something she shouldn't know? And then I remembered....he lies.
He must be telling her I'm impossible. That I'm a terrible human being. That I'm difficult and unreasonable. How can he make this lie hold water if I'm polite and friendly to her and him? The boys have each made something for him and I got a small gift from the boys to give him. We will present him with those things in front of her. I feel like if I saw someone who was supposed to be 'cruel and insane' do that to their 'enemy' I'd have questions as well. Also, I plan on packing snacks for the boys and him for the trip; this is something I'd for whether she was there or not. Are those the acts of a 'crazy and hateful' person? I think not.
Lastly, and some of you may not agree with this, I'm going to apologize for how I spoke to her. I know she was wrong for what she did and if she ever wants to apologize I'd listen. But, I'm not proud of how I spoke to her on the phone; that was the worst side of me. I think she understands my actions but my apology is not to get on her good side. I want to be the bigger person. I don't plan on ever being friends with this woman but she will be left alone with my children at some point so I'm doing this for them. Also, my selfish motive, if she is happy and feels comfortable with my STBX she will want him to move out of state with her. I want this. So I won't do anything to jeopardize this move. I will update you all on Sunday evening with a play by play of our meet.
My Strange Meet Cute
Since my last post my head has been swimming. I spent so many months envisioning this moment and now it is here and all the scenarios I've run in my head seem like cheesy movie scenes. None of it is plausible. I finally decided yesterday to not go into this meet up trying to prove who I am to someone, but more so just be myself and stop worry about the impression that I leave on her. She has an opinion of me that is clouded by his lies so there is no sense trying to change her mind. So I asked myself, 'who am I?'. And then I remembered that before this whole fiasco I was the person who killed with kindness. While that kindness was manipulated by my STBX, I was the one who was in control now. So I did what I thought was right. My children made Father's Day cards for him and then I had them make cards for her. I had them introduce themselves and list one things they'd like to do with her. They drew pictures and colored and all was right in the world. Kill them with kindness...
I text him last night asking what time was pick up. He was at dinner and said he would text me back when they were done. I woke up at 6:30 with no text from him. I text him at 6:30, 7:30, 8 and finally received word back from him just before 9. Be there in a hour. Ok, no that that is settled, what do I wear? I opted for the true to myself outfit; leggings, flip flops and a cute off the shoulder shirt. Very me. Hair: curly. Makeup: light but with a generous amount of mascara. It was now 9:40 so we sat and waited. The boys grew antsy. At 10:30 I get a text that his stomach is upset so they ran a little late. Sounds like a case of nerves to me. Then at just before 11 they arrive. I assemble the boys and the gifts and we come outside.
There she is. Right there. Standing on my steps. For a hot second I raged inside. I wanted to say something smart like, 'you left me for this?'. I looked over at him and the look of panic and tension on his face told me that by doing that I'd be the monster he has fictitiously talked about. So I went back to my motto of kindness, extended my hand, smiled warmly, and introduced myself. She. Was. SHOCKED. Where is this lunatic I've heard so much of? Why isn't she trying to claw out my eyes?? I can only imagine what was running through her head. The boys presented their gifts to dad and then gave her the cards. Shock took her over again. Cards that aren't death threats? How?! Why?!?! At this point her mood went from fear to pure embarrassment. I must say it was more delicious to watch that shift than it was to potentially pull her hair out. We hustled the boys into the car and as my STBX walked to the other side of the car to get them in I turned to her. Shock and fear had returned to her face. She had difficulty making eye contact with me. I could hear my STBX heart beating from 10 feet away. I looked at her and said..
'________ I just want to apologize for how I first spoke to you. I was an emotional wreck but I said some terrible things and that was very unlike me. I know my actions were justified but reflected back on that day I'm unhappy with how I acted towards you.'
Hello shock, have you met our dear friend guilt? A wave of guilt took over her as she bumbled through her own half assed apology. She couldn't say the word 'affair', instead she said 'what happened'. Own it girl, just own it. But she did end her nonsensical word vomit wishing to have a conversation with me about what transpired (I used the word transpired, most of her words were less than 2 syllables). My STBX who had started to look relieved now tensed at the idea of her and I having a chat. I have already promised myself I won't speak badly of him to her. Maybe I'll just give her a link to this thread instead. Haha.
Now I look forward to her spending 48 hours with him and our kids. Now she can see the short temper and lack of patience he has. It is going to be VERY hard for him to keep up his father of the year act. I'm sure my children will give me a play by play of how their visit went. Futile Friends
On Sunday evening I sat home alone, glass of white wine in hand, and replayed the morning over in my head. As I sipped, I let the interaction play out in my mind and tried to analyze the scenario. My interpretation was that she was stunned, he was floored, my kids were indifferent, and I was victorious. I was pleased with my behavior and felt that there wasn't much more that could be done. She would leave Monday evening and it would be some time till her and I spoke again. Then, almost as if prompted by the Gods themselves, my phone pinged. Random number with a strange area code. My heart dropped. I knew it was her. I stared at my phone without opening it for a good minute. I knew that opening that text was opening a door I wasn't sure I wanted opened. Perhaps she would just be apologizing. Or maybe thanking me for earlier. Were the kids ok? Or perhaps she would have questions or concerns about him and want an ally. I knew after opening that text, no matter what it said, things would never be the same.

Simple, right? Straight to the point. A message of thanks. For a split second I regretted my decision to be kind to her. I took away some of her worry and fear and yet none of my emotions have changed. But then I remembered; I'm not in the wrong here. I don't need anyone to tell me it's ok because I was not to blame. We spoke a bit more and by the end of the conversation I felt sorry for her. She has no idea what she is getting into with him. She thinks he is her knight in shining armor but little does she know she will have to polish and maintain that armor for him. She was just like me many years ago, blinded by shiny armor that was really just tin foil. Lies and playing pretend was all he really gave me and I fear this will be her outcome too. The other side of that coin is that she deserves this. You had an affair, she read in my letter that this wasn't the first time I suspected he was unfaithful, yet she thinks it will be different with her? Come on, sis. You're smarter than this, you gotta do better girl.
After I picked up the boys they gave me rave reviews about her and their father. It seems they were rightfully spoiled while she was there and daddy didn't yell or lose patience once. Amazing, huh? My youngest asked me if this was his new sister. I had to explain the concept of separation, divorce and parents dating. Apparently even with his girlfriend in the room my STBX avoided an actual conversation with our kids. Sigh. Some things never change. So while they won knockoff Marvel prizes at the arcade with her and their dad, it seems she has won the biggest knockoff prize of them all.
My First 2nd
For those of you that love the dirt and gossip about my STBX, I'm sorry. This is not a post about him. This is a post about me. A little while back I sat in my home in silence. The children were gone and I was in a partial meditation/trance thinking about what I want my future to look like. I'm 38, I have 2 children, a job, friends, grey hair peeking from my temples, a tight family, future schooling for my 3rd degree, a mortgage, cellulite and a kind (but damaged) heart. Where do I go from here? And more importantly, who would want to go with me? Dating was easy in my 20's. My skin was tight, I could be spontaneous, everything I owned fit perfectly and going on an 11pm date for drinks was totally doable. I am not that girl anymore. So, how does a woman like me meet a man that will like ME? I'm lost. Are there bars? Nightclubs? Pottery painting? I've seen speed dating on TV, does that really exist or is that reserved only for sitcoms? Reluctantly I googled 'how to date in your 30's'. Some of you have probably beaten me to the punchline, but the answer was right in front of me. Online dating. I cringed.
Having no real reason not to, I created an online dating profile. I filled in all the blanks, set my preferences, uploaded a few pictures where the outfit fits right and the lighting is superb and I publish the page. I walk away from my phone full of nervous energy and grab a snack; chocolate will help. After I eat out of pure anxiety I return to my phone. I have a message from the app. I'm afraid. I ignore it out of fear and strangely, guilt. Fear that he may be a serial killer and guilt because while my STBX has moved on, I feel guilty that I am still legally married and on a dating site. I do the only logical thing next; I go to bed.
I lay in bed and try to remember what a first date is like. The awkward hello (...is it a handshake, hug, kiss on the cheek, full open mouth sloppy kiss...), the cumbersome chit chat (...this weather is crazy, read any good books lately, wow how about them Mets...) and of course the uncomfortable goodbye. Ugh, I don't know how to do this or even if I can. Do you talk about your ex? Or do you avoid it like the plague? Do you be no nonsense and get right to the good and bad of yourself to not waste time? Because honestly, who has time to casually date at this age? I tell myself to go to sleep. Eventually, I listen.
I awake to sunlight, the hum of the AC and a pinging phone. I have a text from my mother and14 messages all from the dating site. This must be a mistake. I must have put the wrong age or been too lenient with my preferences. I scroll through message after message and see that these men all share the same thing. They are interested in learning more about me. I sift through profiles like they are resumes for a job and land on 3 potential 'candidates'.
